The eight legged terror
Objective: Create a graphic translation and interpretive phrase composition based around a selected creature.
Part 1: Creature Mark
Phase 1: Selecting + Studying a Creature
After gathering a variety of photo references for each animal, I landed on the tarantula for my final logo mark because I wanted to explore its intimidating, frightening reputation, as well as take on the unique challenge of translating its eight legs into a digital, logo-like format.
Phase 2: Sketching
I conducted a series of sketches based on my collected photo references, focusing on pose exploration and highlighting of the tarantula's important physical traits, as well as finding an appropriate way to 'stylize' the creature.
Phase 3: Digital Translations
Moving onto the computer, I began translating the best of my previous sketches into a digital format, using poses that best displayed the physical traits of the tarantula. When moving into ideations, I chose to move forward with the first two poses, but ultimately ended up choosing the second one for my final product.
Phase 4: IDEATION
Moving forward with the first two poses, I made ideations on several aspects of the tarantula. As previously stated, it was during this phase that I decided that my final product would depict the tarantula from the top view, as I believed it was the most effective display of the tarantula's features.
Phase 5: Ideation, continued
After deciding on a pose, I experimented further with the appearance of texture on the tarantula's back. After gathering feedback, I decided that the third option was the most effective option.
Phase 6: Final Adjustments
When gathering more feedback, I was told that the angles on the tarantula's legs were too complicated and could be simplified. So, I constructed a new grid system based on a series of circles and ovals and made the legs conform to that.

Phase 7: phrase development
For this project, I created the interpretive phrase in collaboration with my classmate, Ben Solinski. He composed five poetic phrases about the tarantula, and I chose to move forward with a shortened version of the third one on the list. I added the tarantula's name into the phrase for ease of communication, and resulted with 'an eight legged terror tiptoes through the shadows'. I would later a 'the tarantula' to the phrase for clarity.
Phase 8: composition ideation
I began my composition by trying to illustrate my tarantula within an environment. However, I came to the realization that my chosen phrase may favor a composition that is more interpretive rather than illustrative.
Phase 9: composition reworking
In my reworkings, I used lines as well as triangular forms to imply the 'shadows', and chose to move forward with the bottom right iteration, because having the tarantula diagonal felt like it was running across the page, while having it vertically static felt more as though it was tiptoeing.
Phase 10: color application iteration
I experimented with which triangular forms I was to keep black and which ones I would make white. I decided to make only one of the triangles white, and to have it point to and match with 'terror' to bring more attention to the word.
Phase 11: text arrangement
I felt as though there was not enough movement in the way I had arranged the type, so I decided to take the words 'an eight legged' and place them among the legs of the tarantula to emphasize them. I also chose to make 'the tarantula' white to draw more attention to it, and also to link it to 'terror'.
