FLoodland
Objective: Conceptualize, photograph, and design an alternate LP Jacket for the album 'Floodland' by the sisters of mercy.
Phase 1: Mood Board
My inspiration was led primarily by the mysterious, slightly edgy aesthetics of Old Horror films, as I felt they would translate the album's themes of desolation quite well. I also felt as though it would fit the overall gothic aesthetic of The Sisters of Mercy.
Phase 2: initial photoshoot
I shot these images in my parent's basement, using my brother as a model. I shot with the lights completely off and made use of a spotlight to create a striking, mysterious image like some of the inspiration shown in the previous step. I experimented with the harsh, shapely forms of light and shadow to obscure the model and create a sinister, foreboding effect.
Phase 3: wordmark
I began sketching the wordmark on paper, trying to invoke the uneven, hand-drawn likeness of old horror movie title screen (see some of the text examples in the mood board). I then moved to sketching in Procreate as it gave me better ability to control and adjust the letterforms when sketching.
Phase 4: final wordmark + side labels
Phase 5: text iterations
I added the essential text to the front and back of the LP, including the title, band name, song names, and barcode/copyright info. I experimented with text sectioning and placement, also making some iterations with my hand-drawn side labels for the back. However, I decided not to use them for the back as it felt like it drew attention away from the photo.
Phase 6: Lyric card and decal design
I then designed some extra elements using the hand-drawn side labels from earlier.
